How does Soma work?

Carisoprodol as a main active substance of Soma suppresses interneuronal impulse transmission in the reticular formation of the spinal cord, though the exact mechanism of action of this drug has not yet been established.

Carisoprodol is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, reaching a maximum concentration within 90-120 minutes. The muscle relaxant effect is observed within 30 minutes after oral administration, and its duration reaches 6 hours.

The agent is metabolized by the liver by cytochrome P450 oxidase and it’s excreted from the body through the kidneys. The half-life of carisoprodol is about 2 hours, and half-life of its metabolite, meprobamate, is about 10 hours.
